Grateful for the Pets Who Share Our Lives
November has a way of reminding us to slow down and think about the things we're grateful for.
Family. Friends. The people who make our lives a little brighter.
And, of course, the four-legged (and sometimes feathered!) family members who have a special way of filling our homes and hearts.
As a pet photographer, I get to meet so many wonderful animals, each with their own personality, quirks and ways of showing affection.
And one thing I've learned is that the moments we treasure most aren't always the big ones.
Very often, they're the little things that happen every single day.
It's the Little Things
It's the enthusiastic greeting when you walk through the door, even if you've only been gone ten minutes.
The familiar sound of paws following you from room to room.
The dog who somehow manages to take up an entire sofa.
The cat who insists that whatever you're doing can wait because they've decided it's time for attention.
It's the funny expressions, the stubborn little habits, the unexpected moments of affection and the way they always seem to know when we need a little extra comfort.
These are the things that make them them.
And while we may not think much about those ordinary moments as they're happening, they're often the very things that make us smile the most.
They Make Ordinary Days Something Special
Our pets have a wonderful way of bringing us into the present.
They encourage us to get outside, even when we'd rather stay on the sofa. They make us laugh when we're having a difficult day. They remind us that sometimes the best thing we can do is put everything else aside and simply enjoy being together.
I see that joy during photography sessions all the time.
A dog who can't resist exploring every interesting smell.
A cat who decides the session will proceed entirely on their terms.
A pet who suddenly does something so perfectly characteristic that everyone bursts out laughing.
Those unscripted moments are often my favorites.
Because the most meaningful portraits aren't necessarily the ones where everyone is sitting perfectly still and looking at the camera.
They're the ones that capture a little piece of who your pet really is.
A Little Gratitude from My Own Home
Anyone who knows me knows that Rascal has been a very big part of my life and my photography journey.
At fourteen, he still has his own opinions about how things should be done, and he certainly keeps me on my toes.
And then there's Teyla, who brings her own feline personality to the household.
Life with pets isn't always neat, predictable or convenient.
There are routines to work around, fur on everything, unexpected interruptions and moments when you wonder who's actually in charge.
But there is also so much laughter, companionship and affection.
And I wouldn't trade those little everyday moments for anything.
Celebrating Who They Are, Just as They Are
One of the things I love most about photographing pets is getting to know their individual personalities.
Some are outgoing and adventurous. Others are shy, cautious or happiest staying close to their people.
Some are wonderfully well-behaved.
Others have absolutely no interest in following directions.
And that's perfectly fine with me.
I always follow their lead.
Whether we're exploring a quiet beach in Clearwater, enjoying the gardens around Largo, finding a colorful corner of Dunedin, or creating portraits in the comfort of home, the experience is planned around the pet in front of my camera.
Because I don't believe our pets need to be anything other than themselves to deserve beautiful portraits.
Their personalities, their expressions, their little quirks — those are the things worth celebrating.
This Thanksgiving, I'm Grateful for All of Them
As Thanksgiving approaches, I've been thinking about the wonderful pets and people I've had the privilege of meeting through Blue Merle Photography.
The playful dogs, the gentle seniors, the curious cats, the shy rescues who gradually find their confidence, and the people who love them so deeply.
Every one of them has a story.
And being trusted to capture a little part of that story is something I never take for granted.
So this Thanksgiving, I hope you'll take a moment to appreciate all those little things your pet does that make you smile.
Maybe it's the way they greet you in the morning.
Maybe it's a silly habit that only you understand.
Or maybe it's simply the comfort of having them nearby.
Whatever it is, those moments are worth celebrating.
From my little family to yours, wishing you and your pets a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter and all the little things that make life beautiful.
With gratitude,
Yamile, Rascal & Teyla
