A pet photoshoot is a fun way to capture your dog’s personality and the love you share. But with new surroundings, exciting distractions, and lots of movement, safety should always come first
As a Florida dog photographer, your dog’s safety is my top priority. We want to document beautiful images for you to treasure forever, but no one will enjoy the process if your dog isn’t safe or comfortable.
One of the best ways to keep your pup safe during a session is by keeping them on a leash. Even if your dog is well-trained, unexpected things can happen—loud noises, other animals, or simply the excitement of the moment. A leash ensures they stay close, comfortable, and secure so we can focus on getting beautiful, stress-free photos.
Let me share more about why it’s important we use the leash and some other safety tips for you.

Why Keeping Your Dog on a Leash is So Important
It’s natural to want photos of your dog looking free and playful, but a leash plays a big role in their safety.
Here’s why we always recommend keeping one on during a session:
Prevents Accidents – Even calm dogs can get startled or chase after something unexpected. A leash keeps them safe and within reach.
Helps with Focus – New environments come with lots of distractions. A leash allows gentle guidance so your dog stays engaged.
Required at Many Locations – Parks, trails, and public spaces often have leash laws. Keeping your pup leashed ensures we follow the rules while still capturing great moments.
Gives You Peace of Mind – You won’t have to worry about them running off or getting too excited. You can relax and enjoy the session!
Will a Leash Ruin the Pet Photoshoot?
Not at all! Many pet owners worry that a leash will be distracting in the final images, but we have a few tricks to work around it:
- Choosing the Right Leash – A thin, neutral-colored leash blends in and is less noticeable.
- Creative Posing – We use angles and positioning to keep the leash hidden.
- Post-Editing Magic – In many cases, leashes can be removed during editing, giving you those clean, natural-looking portraits you love.

Other Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe & Comfortable
Beyond using a leash, there are a few other ways to ensure your pup stays happy and secure during their session:
Bring Treats & Favorite Toys – Familiar rewards help keep them engaged and excited.
Choose a Safe, Calm Location – We’ll find a spot with minimal distractions so your dog can relax.
Stay Hydrated – Florida’s heat can be tricky! We’ll watch the weather and ensure we don’t have your photoshoot on a very hot day. During the session, we’ll take breaks and make sure your pup has water. (oh, and bring water for yourself.) During the hot days, photoshoots are scheduled at sunrise (around 7 AM), which is the coolest time of the day.
Take It Slow – If your dog needs a moment to adjust, that’s okay! There’s no rush—we work at their pace.
Your Dog’s Safety Comes First
Every dog is different, and our goal is to make the session as safe and enjoyable as possible for both of you. We’ll take our time, follow your pup’s lead, and make sure they feel comfortable every step of the way.
By keeping them on a leash and taking a few simple precautions, we can create beautiful images while making sure they stay safe and happy. And most importantly, you’ll walk away with photos that capture their true spirit—full of love, joy, and personality.
