One of the conversations I have most often with clients begins with a simple question:
“Could we do the session in our backyard?”
It’s an understandable request. Our homes are where our pets feel most comfortable. It’s where they play, nap in the sun, greet us at the door, and spend most of their lives. Naturally, it feels like the most meaningful place to photograph them.
When I begin planning a session, though, I’m looking at something most people don’t naturally notice: the quality of the light.
Beautiful portraits aren’t just about a pretty location — they’re about how the light moves through that space. Soft, directional light is what allows your pet’s eyes, expression, and personality to truly come alive in a photograph.

Around Clearwater, Dunedin, Seminole, Indian Rocks Beach, and St. Petersburg, we’re lucky to have so many beautiful environments to choose from — quiet parks, shaded trails, coastal views, and peaceful natural areas.
Sometimes we even discover that a spot just outside a client’s neighborhood — a nearby park path or a quiet waterfront — becomes the perfect setting.
What If My Pet Is More Comfortable at Home?
This is a very real concern, and one I take seriously.
Some pets truly do best in the environment they know — especially cats, senior pets, birds, or animals who feel anxious in new places. In those cases, an at-home session can be a wonderful option.
When we plan a home session, I approach it thoughtfully. Before the shoot, we identify a few locations around your home that will photograph beautifully. That might mean your pet’s favorite resting spot near a large window, a shaded corner of the yard, or a quiet area where they naturally relax.
I also pay close attention to the time of day and the direction of light. In some situations, I may use simple lighting tools or backdrops to gently shape the light while keeping the environment calm and familiar.
